If you need a crown on your second or third molars, sometimes it is best to get a full gold crown.  There are a few reasons for this.  The first is strength.  Your back molars have more pressure applied to them than any other teeth in the mouth, since they are the first teeth to touch when you bite down.  If you have a porcelain crown on your back teeth, there is better chance that the porcelain is going to crack and break off.  If you have a full gold crown, there is no chance of the crown breaking and having to replace it.  Another reason full gold crowns are best in back molars is because of limited space.  Sometimes your back molars are shorter than the rest of your teeth which limits how much your dentist can prep the tooth.  If the dentist can only prep minimal amounts of your tooth, then the crown is going to be very thin.  Full gold crowns can be very thin and still be as strong as ever, where a porcelain crown can fracture very easily if the prep is very thin.  The same goes for full gold crowns as the high noble crowns, the precious metal is better accepted by your gum tissue and this decreases the chances of sensitivity around that tooth.
